U-Pick Pumpkins Hand Painted Sign - and the story behind it....

Every year at this time pumpkin patches start advertising with their U-Pick signs....  And every single year those signs remind me of  the year we had a pumpkin patch in our backyard.

Several years ago we lived on the front of a flagged lot and our landlord decided he was going to plant a pumpkin patch on the other lot, out back....  That year, in early October, as I always do, I went out and bought three large pumpkins for our front porch.  Always a tall and skinny one and two shorter fatter ones.... always... I had them on the front porch amongst potted mums and other plants, and my fall display was looking pretty good that year!  I think I paid about $12 or so for the three of them and during those years, that was a lot to me!

One Saturday afternoon, coming home from running errands, the first thing I noticed were U-Pick signs on the street - pointing towards the back of our house.  My landlord's pumpkin patch was open for business, even though there were no pumpkins out there larger than a pie pumpkin!  The signs read Pumpkins  U-Pick .25........

Well, I'm sure you can imagine my surprise - amongst other reactions - when I walked up to the front door and in place of my three large pumpkins lay 3 shiny quarters with a handwritten note that said, "Thank you!  We weren't sure where to leave the money for the pumpkins......."

And THAT is what inspired this sign!

There is a very detailed tutorial on how to make this sign HERE.

It's hanging on a dresser that sits by the front door and makes me smile each time I come home!!

What memories does this time of the year bring back for you?
