I made this inspirational mirror for my daughter's lovely black/white & pink French inspired bedroom.

I've been debating what to do with these stools for some time now.   They are much needed and highly functional for our space - but they were completely dated looking.

Ohhhh, was it ever hard for me to limit this list to JUST 5 items.....

 

 I personally look for about 30 different things each time I go into a thrift store...

 

But these are my favorite home decor items that I find are almost always cheaper than paying retail and usually quite plentiful.

Goodbyes and new beginnings...

Last week we had to say goodbye to our beloved dog Chase. He was a Golden Retriever that I adopted 5 years ago from a family on Craigslist when he was 5 years young. Ironically, he and my son Joey shared a birthdate - 7/2/03 and from the first time we brought him home, they shared a special bond.

 

Ahhh-mazing Garage Sale Finds

Last weekend my neighborhood's annual garage sale beckoned... And while I didn't get a ton of JUNK stuff, like I normally do.... I did get a few large items FREE or nearly FREE!!! Who can complain about that? 

 

Not this girl! 

 

Here's just a few things I picked up:

 

Solid oak dining table.  FREE.... Yep, free! 

 

It was late in the day and when I spotted this table (which ironically, I owned this same piece once upon a time - about 15 years ago).  The family was closing up for the day and it just so happens I have been looking for a table like this (again....) for my dining room. 

 

Now, from this picture, it doesn't look too bad... but this had to be the GROSSEST table I've ever seen.... All kinds of dried food on it, paint, glitter glue everywhere.....  But the two most important things to me where....

 

1) Solid Wood & Sturdy = GREAT BONES

2) It was FREE!!!!!!

Next, I found this mirror - and I was actually going to drive by because I thought they'd be asking too much for it....

 

 

 

What you really can't tell from this picture is that this mirror is OVER 6 feet long and 3 feet high.  Yes, it's gold and OF COURSE I will paint it.... But the sheer size makes it amazing to me.... It was $20, which I felt was a steal!  And the edges are beveled to boot!

 

 

Then I came across this chair, which I think will get a paint job, then a hold cut in the seat for a planter and a new home outside... 

 

 

 

Best part.... it was a buck! $1....

(Are you starting to understand I'm a bit of a cheapskate and I love me a good deal!!!)



 

 

Last but certainly not least.... This chair. 

 

 

 

Again, it's solid and the bones are great!  I haven't refinished an upholstered piece yet, but considering I paid $1 for this one also....(Happy dance!) what have I got to lose????

Great Estate Sale Find

I found this primitive little dresser at an Estate Sale last month.   

It was only $20 which was a STEAL!

Handpainted Sign on the back of a CABINET door!

I recently bought a Silhouette Portrait. I was so excited until I opened it up and attempted to use it (without reading any directions). I have to say, I'm pretty computer literate and this thing is extremely intimidating for me. Needless to say, I could figure out how to cut letters - so I cut the letters I needed for the sign I have been wanting - and here is how it turned out.

 

I painted the back of a cabinet door black with craft paint and laid out my letters (cut from plain cardstock). I put a dab of glue under each letter to hold it in place, then I used a dauber and went over all the letters again in black. As soon as it was dry to touch, I used the dauber and went over the entire sign with the off white craft paint. I like the rough, shabby look, so I wasn't too concerned with getting it perfect. 

 

Once that was dry to touch I pulled the letters off. A couple of them were already stuck to the board in spots, so I left them as-is. Since this was my first project and I was admittedly intimidated by the Silhouette, I didn't use vinyl because of the cost. Once I got all the cardstock off that I could, I used fine grit sand paper and sanded away - this removed the remaining cardstock that was stuck in places. At that point I used an artists brush to touch up some of the letters and voila - done...

 

But....as I looked at it perched up on top of my kitchen cabinets I felt as though something was still missing. So I put three quarter sized dots of paint on a paper plate (Bleached Sand, Raw Sienna and Fawn) and dry brushed them across the sign, like this.

 

 

Now, that is exactly the look I was going for....Here's the finished sign. What do you think?
